Yesterday three governors including myself, Mrs Ogley and Miss S Elliot went on a learning walk around school with Mr Huxley. We started in the Early Years Foundation Stage and then visited classes 2,3 and 4. We spent about 5-10 minutes in each classroom.
In the debriefing session afterwards we commented upon the positive learning environment, the calm and purposeful atmosphere in each class, the way support staff were actively engaged in the pupils learning. It was also noted that pupils were encouraged to self assess against success criteria and respond to feedback through the school marking policy.
Afterwards we had a question and answer session where several topics were discussed including; allocation and impact of the pupil premium, challenging gifted and talented pupils, effective tracking of pupils, pupils involvement in self assessment, early identification and support of under achieving pupils, quality of provision was considered with regard in particular to improving outdoor facilities in EYFS, how the quality of teaching is monitored and what measures are in place to improve attendance and if any new initiatives are being considered.
It was thought by all involved that the meeting was productive. An opportunity for governors to monitor pupil’s workbooks across the curriculum from each class has been arranged for Friday, June 19th at 1.00 p.m.

World Book day

On Friday I went into school to judge children’s writing about the four books that had been introduced to the whole school by the teachers. The books were: Green Eggs and Ham, Robin hood, Going on a Bear Hunt and Farmer Duck. I was impressed with quality of the pupils’ comments, which showed an empathy with characters and an enjoyment of the books. It was very difficult to choose the winning entry from each year group. Afterwards I read a short story to class 4. The children were very attentive and gained a smiley face on their class merit chart.

The Spring Term Full Governors Meeting took place on February 4th. Mr Elgy was reappointed as chair and Councillor Fielding as vice chair. Under the reconstitution of the governing body which comes into being on March 18th, there are no vacancies.

The governors were briefed in the Headteachers report about the School Improvement Plan, Self Evaluation Form, pupil progress among vulnerable pupils and the impact of the pupil premium. Specific questions were asked to the head teacher and deputy head teacher about  the development of the new curriculum in school, sports premium, pupils progress in writing, assessment without levels and the holistic development of pupils. The head reported that the recent LA quality assurance visit had gone well. The adviser was happy with the school’s judgement and progress made.

In the section on financial matters there were no overspends and the  school budget was deemed to be on track. The improved of resources were discussed such as the current better leasing arrangement for the school photocopier and savings made and improved service by changing internet providers. The updated school finance policy was approved. The Schools Financial Value Standard was approved, having previously being extensively discussed between the business manager and the chair.

In the concluding items governors highlighted that the data provided in the Headteachers report showed how interventions were impacting on outcomes for pupils. the provision of activities through the sports premium and a sport club provided at half term should encourage pupils to lead a healthier lifestyle. Better use of the building to allow the setting up of the school library in the old dining hall, moving the the kitchen so that the serving hatch opens to the school hall have improved meal and learning provision for the pupils. Questions asked by governors to the senior leadership of school both on frequent visits to the school and at governors meetings seek to hold the Headteacher to account.

Corridor Cadet Interviews

Today I have been privileged to feed back to the pupils who were interviewed for the position of Corridor Cadets in school. The unsuccessful applicants were praised for their applications and were given tips to help them should they apply in future. The successful applicants were congratulated on their interview answers and were reassured of their suitability for this important role in helping to make Haggonfields School an even better place to be.
